Hand hygiene is the most important action against nosocomial infections
Excessive and sometimes unnecessary prescriptions of antibiotics have led to a significant development of multi-resistant bacteria in recent years, posing a major health threat. In hospitals, the number of nosocomial infections has increased dramatically. In Europe alone, hospital infections lead to 91,000 deaths per year. Studies have shown that the risk of multi-resistant bacteria will cause more deaths than cancerous diseases in the next few years.
It’s especially important to contain the greatest hygiene risks in hospitals. Here, essential germ carriers are human hands and a lack of hand hygiene. The problem isn’t lacking legal regulations – there are numerous – but the lack of compliance of nursing staff. While sanitary screening is often audited, this leads to falsified statistics, as staff disinfect more often when they are being monitored. So, while positive hand hygiene statistics are rising, infection rates are also increasing.
It is therefore necessary to find a fast and cost-efficient system that collects and correctly evaluates hand-hygiene data in real-time and thus leads to greater willingness to desinfect. The Danish manufacturer Kauko has found a start-up, Sani Nudge, which can provide these demands. Sani Nudge works through an innovative sensor system that sits above patient beds and on-site disinfection dispensers and collects disinfectant data through a nursing staff ID. These data remain anonymous and are only used to evaluate the disinfection compliance and to ask the nursing staff for better hand hygiene through unobtrusive hints, so-called “nudges”.
The data obtained in this way is evaluated by Sani analytics in a standalone system, without the need for a connection to the WLAN or the IT infrastructure. Sani Nudge’s reference projects showed a positive improvement in infection rates, for example significantly reducing the infection rates of urinary tract infections, Clostrididae difficile and bacteremia.
Whether through Sani Nudge or other hand disinfection systems: Digitalization of the sanitation sector can help hospitals improve patient risk and economic efficiency through shorter hospital stays, lower liability risks, and fewer sick leaves of the medical staff.
